Kenting Trip
2009 9.29
Day 1:
It was a heavy rainy day in the morning when we headed to the Hong Kong airport by taxi. Six of us, included me took the flight to Kaohshiung (高雄) using Mandarin Airlines. Most of the passengers seemed to be Taiwanese.
When we got off the Kaoshiung airport, it was small and quiet. No salespeople appeared to sell their services to tourists like us. I think because most HK people prefer using Dragon airlines.
After having done the exchange currency, we rent a 8-Person Van which was booked in advance and started our journey to Kenting (墾丁). It was told that the best way of travelling within Kenting was using your own transport.

On the way to Kenting, we passed through Zhutian (竹田). It is a small town in Ping tong County (屏東縣). Its agricultural production and Zhutian train station are well-known. We visited this olden wooden train station which was built during Japanese Occupation of Taiwan.
It took about 2.5hr from Kaohshiung to Kenting. First we got settled in an apartment called Nixon Head 658-1 (船帆石658-1) . It is a cozy guesthouse with spacious two floors apartment. We could see the Nixon Head from our balcony, a huge piece of coral reef standing a few meters off the shore. It was told that it looked like former U.S. President Richard Nixon. I had no ideas about that but I thought it really looked like a human head.
Once you arrive at Kenting, you can see many scooters there, a means of transport within this area. We drove from our apartment to Hengchun (恆春) and had our first dinner in Kenting. We tried braised beef noodles, one of the famous Taiwanese food, was undoubtedly delicious. Passing through the Hengchun east gate, we headed to Chuhuo (出火). Chuhuo is a place where there are numerous fissures in the mudstone through which natural gas leaks and is alight into flame.

Before going back to the apartment, we spent the night in Kenting Street, strolled along the night market, tried the Taiwanese small eats and played some little game there. We had much fun tonight.
